Myanmar national held with 50,500 meth tablets in Mizoram

Aizawl, Sep 17 (UNI) A Myanmar national was arrested with 50,500 methamphetamine tablets weighing 5.5 kg in Mizoram’s Champhai district after a joint operation by the state Excise and Narcotics department and Assam Rifles, an official said on Thursday.
The seizure was made around 4.10 pm on Wednesday at a location between Zote and Bulfek villages near the Myanmar border, Excise and Narcotics department spokesperson Peter Zohmingthanga said.
The arrested person was identified as Kamkimsiang, 20, a resident of Bukphir village in Myanmar’s Chin State. Officials alleged that the methamphetamine had been smuggled into Mizoram from Myanmar for onward sale outside the state.
Kamkimsiang was booked under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and detained in Champhai town. He was produced before a district court in Champhai on Thursday.
The seizure comes amid continued drug trafficking along Mizoram’s international border with Myanmar, with methamphetamine among the narcotics frequently seized by enforcement agencies in the state.
Separately, official records show that 44 people have died in Mizoram due to drug abuse since January this year. The toll comprises 38 males and six females, according to the Excise and Narcotics Department.
The latest deaths have taken the state’s cumulative drug-related death toll since 1984 to 2,034, including 1,786 males and 248 females.
Painkillers have accounted for a substantial share of the deaths recorded over the years. Spasmo Proxyvon and Parvon Spa, both prescription painkillers, were linked to at least 1,161 deaths between 1990 and 2017, according to department records. Their manufacture was subsequently banned by the Central Government.
Heroin abuse has claimed nearly 320 lives in Mizoram since 1984, while more than 540 people have died after abusing heroin in combination with other drugs during the period covered by the department’s records.
Mizoram, which shares a 510-km international border with Myanmar, has remained vulnerable to the trafficking of narcotic substances into the state and their movement to other parts of India. UNI ZS NST CDS
