Rs 10-per-student bribe grabs spotlight on Odisha auditors after Rs 14.38 lakh seizure

Bhubaneswar, Sep 11 (UNI) An alleged demand of Rs 10 for every enrolled student from schools and hostels under audit has emerged as the key angle in the seizure of Rs 14.38 lakh in suspected ill-gotten cash from two auditors of Odisha’s Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes Development Department in Baripada.
Acting on credible inputs, Vigilance officials intercepted the auditors late Thursday night while they were travelling in the District Welfare Officer’s (DWO) office vehicle from the DWO office to their hotel after completing audit work.
The officials allegedly found Rs 5.51 lakh packed in 52 envelopes and 20 loose bundles in their possession. The auditors could not satisfactorily explain the cash, Vigilance said. Searches of their hotel rooms led to the recovery of another Rs 8.87 lakh, taking the total seizure to Rs 14.38 lakh.
