ECoR intensifies ‘Operation Narcos’ against drug trafficking through rail network

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19 (UNI) East Coast Railway (ECoR) has intensified intelligence-led operations against the illegal transportation of narcotic and psychotropic substances through the rail network under ‘Operation Narcos’, strengthening its efforts towards a drug-free India.
As part of the drive, ECoR has inducted 18 new sniffer dogs, including 15 specially trained narcotics detection dogs, taking the total strength of its canine squad to 33. Of these, 20 dogs are specifically deployed for detecting narcotic substances.
The sniffer dogs will assist the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in checking trains, platforms, luggage, parcel areas and other vulnerable locations across the railway network. Specialised training for the newly inducted dogs will commence from October 25, 2026, and they are expected to become fully operational by March 2027.
The ECoR RPF is also using CCTV surveillance, baggage scanners, drones and advanced analytical systems to detect and prevent drug trafficking through the railway network. It is coordinating with the Government Railway Police (GRP), state police and other law enforcement agencies for intelligence sharing and joint operations.
During January-August 2026, a total of 75 cases were detected under ‘Operation Narcos’. The RPF seized 1,079.642 kg of ganja and 60 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, collectively valued at around Rs 3.60 crore, and arrested 92 persons allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
The intensified drive is aimed at curbing the use of the railway network for transportation of narcotic substances and strengthening surveillance and enforcement mechanisms across the ECoR jurisdiction.
