Kolkata: Woman arrested for exotring money from men by filing false rape, harassment cases

Kolkata, Sep 19 (UNI) A woman has been arrested from Santoshpur in the southern part of the city for allegedly filing repeated "baseless complaints" of rape and sexual harassment against men and using threats of lodging such cases to extort money from the victims, police said on Saturday.
The woman, Rageshree Nag, was arrested on Friday when personnel from the Panchasayar Police Station conducted a raid outside her residence on Santoshpur East Road.
She was arrested in connection with a case registered at the Panchasayar Police Station.
Police sources also revealed Rageshree has filed a total of 11 cases against approximately 14 men, alleging rape and sexual harassment. Authorities are investigating the veracity of these allegations and whether there was any ulterior motive behind filing the cases.
On being produced before the Alipore Court on Saturday, the judge remanded her to police custody for ten days.
According to police sources, a case was registered against Rageshree on April 9, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita following a court order.
It is alleged that the husband of the complainant in the case was the arrested woman's former doctor. Allegations suggest she had been harassing him since December 2025, threatening to implicate him in a false case if money was not paid.
Police claim that the investigation has uncovered evidence of the arrested woman's direct involvement, leading to her arrest. She is currently being interrogated to uncover the full extent of the racket.
Investigators further claim that there are two prior cases of extortion against Rageshree. Some complainants in those cases allege that attempts were made to extort money by threatening to file rape charges; the police are examining these allegations as well.
Social activist Deepika Narayan Bhardwaj has also spoken out about the incident on social media.
She claims that the woman has filed cases involving serious charges, including rape, against multiple individuals in Kolkata. She has also alleged that the woman threatened police officials.
Deepika has termed a rape case filed against a national-level athlete as "false." She alleges that the case created obstacles for the athlete's travel abroad, although the veracity of this claim could not be independently verified.
Retired IPS officer R.K. Vij has responded to Deepika's social media post, hoping the matter will be examined seriously and appropriate action taken. Consequently, alongside the Panchasayar case, the earlier allegations are now also under investigation.
Police stated that, in addition to the extortion charges against the arrested woman, records of previous cases are being scrutinised. At the same time, the veracity of the rape and sexual harassment cases filed by her will also be verified.
