Women's empowerment, key to Bihar's prosperity: CM

Patna, Sep 19 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary today said the state’s women were progressing rapidly and their increasing economic, social and political participation was an important indicator of Bihar’s changing social landscape.
Addressing a function organised to mark the 25th foundation day of the Bihar State Commission for Women, Choudhary said the commission’s work in protecting women’s rights and dignity was commendable.
The Chief Minister inaugurated the silver jubilee celebrations, during which a short film on the commission’s 25-year journey was screened. He also released a special postage stamp on the commission in collaboration with the Department of Posts and unveiled its souvenir.
Choudhary said the provision of 50 per cent reservation for women in panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies had strengthened their participation in public life.
He also highlighted the role of Jeevika in women''s economic empowerment, saying the government was providing financial assistance, training and employment opportunities to women.
Through schemes including the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, women were taking up activities such as tailoring, poultry farming and goat rearing and moving towards self-reliance, he said.
The government has set a target of directly connecting one crore women with employment, Choudhary said.
He added that under the dress-uniform scheme, instead of providing money to students for purchasing uniforms, arrangements were being made to supply uniforms prepared by Jeevika women, which would also generate new employment opportunities.
On girls' education, the Chief Minister said incentive schemes were being implemented at the matriculation, intermediate and graduation levels. Students preparing for competitive examinations were also being provided assistance, he said.
Under the Balika PhD Fellowship, the government aims to provide Rs 10,000 per month to 1,000 girl students every year for higher education and research, Choudhary said.
He added that work was also underway towards establishing a university dedicated to women to expand opportunities for higher education.
On women's safety, Choudhary said the state had introduced the ''Police Didi'' initiative, under which women police personnel were being deployed around schools, colleges and other educational institutions to ensure the safety of girl students.
The Chief Minister said the Bihar State Commission for Women should go beyond resolving complaints and regularly provide suggestions to the government for improving the status of women.
He also emphasised better coordination among women representatives and called for an active role by the commission in strengthening women''s social, economic and political empowerment. "Women''s empowerment is an important foundation for Bihar''s prosperity," Choudhary said.
He congratulated women associated with the commission on its 25th foundation day and expressed confidence that it would continue working towards bringing women into the mainstream of development and protecting their rights and dignity as it moves towards its golden jubilee.

Union Minister Chirag Paswan hands over 78 appointment letters at Rozgar Mela in Siliguri
