Suvendu to review 125-Day rural employment scheme, summons BDOs for emergency meeting

Kolkata, Nov 3 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari will hold an emergency review meeting with block development officers (BDOs) from across the state on Wednesday to assess the implementation of the 125-day rural employment scheme amid growing concerns over the slow pace of work.
The meeting will begin at 11.30 am at the headquarters of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department in Salt Lake.
Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh and Minister of State Shantanu Pramanik will also attend the meeting.
The Chief Minister is expected to examine district-wise progress under the scheme and seek explanations directly from BDOs on blocks where implementation has been slow and targets have not been achieved.
Officials will be asked to explain the reasons behind delays and the steps being taken to accelerate work.
According to Nabanna sources, Adhikari had held a meeting with senior state government secretaries last week, during which he expressed strong dissatisfaction over the progress of the rural employment programme.
He reportedly made it clear that negligence or lack of initiative in implementing government schemes would not be tolerated.
The officials concerned were also instructed to consider strict administrative action, including the transfer of BDOs, if any dereliction of duty was found.
Wednesday's meeting is expected to assess whether the Chief Minister's warning has translated into any improvement at the ground level and to fix responsibility for delays.
Following the change of government in the state, the entitlement under the rural employment programme was increased from 100 to 125 days under the Centre's Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act, popularly known as VB-G RAM G.
The new arrangement came into effect across the country on July 1, 2026.
However, the state government believes that implementation of the expanded employment programme has not gathered the expected momentum.
The meeting is likely to focus on accelerating work at the block level and ensuring accountability among officials responsible for executing the scheme.
