Haldia Petrochemicals chief calls for Rs 4.7-trillion Bengal economy by 2047, pitches deep-tech push

Haldia, Oct 14 (UNI) Calling for a radical industrial and technological transformation of West Bengal, Haldia Petrochemicals Limited chairman Purnendu Chatterjee on Wednesday set a target of building a Rs 4.7-trillion economy by 2047, proposing a sovereign wealth fund and a major expansion of manufacturing and deep-tech industries to generate employment and finance the state's welfare commitments.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Haldia Phenol Acetone Project, Chatterjee said Bengal had the resources and intellectual capital to achieve an annual growth rate of 14 to 15 per cent, but would have to move beyond conventional industries and capture the emerging global profit pools in artificial intelligence, data centres, robotics, quantum technology and other advanced scientific fields.
He called for a comprehensive state master plan for 2047 and a permanent capital fund to finance long-term industrial growth, arguing that Bengal's mounting debt and welfare obligations could not be addressed without creating new sources of revenue.
