Union MoE deputes officials to review functioning of NEHU in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 21 (UNI) The Union Ministry of Education (MoE) has deputed two of its officers to review the functioning of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya.
In a letter to Vice Chancellor of NEHU, the two-member delegation Additional Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Sunil Kumar Barnwal and Director, Department of Higher Education, Subrat Kumar Pradhan is scheduled to visit NEHU on May 22 (Thursday).
“Their (MoE officials) visit is mainly to review the functioning of the NEHU during the last six months,” a NEHU official said.
The scheduled visit of the two MoE officials to NEHU is significant after Vice Chancellor in-charge Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh chaired the the adjourned 113th Academic Council meeting on Wednesday, despite strong objections from Vice Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla.
Shukla had termed the Academic Council convened by Sungoh as "unauthorised and without legal sanctity”.
“I will take up this matter (Sungoh’s convened Academic Council meeting) in the Executive Council meeting, the highest body of NEHU, and appropriate action will be taken,” Shukla said.
Last month, Sungoh took charge as Vice Chancellor in-charge NEHU because Shukla has not physically resumed duty in NEHU since going on leave in December, 2024.
Shukla is reportedly functioning remotely as NEHU Vice Chancellor from the varsity’s guest house located in Guwahati (Assam).
“The Academic Council was successfully held as per NEHU Statute 2(A)(5)(i) and relevant Ministry of Education notifications and legal,” NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) president Prof. Lakhon Kma said.
On November 14, 2024, the MoE had constituted a two-member committee to probe into the alleged mismanagement and administrative failures within NEHU.
The probe was initiated during the indefinite hunger strike spearheaded by NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), demanding the immediate removal of Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla as Vice-Chancellor of NEHU.
The Union is also demanding the immediate removal of the University Registrar Col. Omkar Singh’s (Retd.) and Deputy Registrar (Academics), Amit Gupta, alleging that the VC appointed them without following the University rules. UNI RRK SSP
