Nagaland minister asks youth to value democratic rights

Dimapur, Oct 27 (UNI) Nagaland power and parliamentary affairs minister KG Kenye on Tuesday urged youth to value the democratic rights and freedoms available to Indian citizens, particularly freedom of expression.
Drawing attention to people worldwide who are denied the opportunity to express their views, Kenye observed that the ability to speak freely comes with corresponding responsibilities.
Addressing the Nagaland University's 18th National Youth Parliament Competition 2026 at its Lumami campus, he called on the youth to believe in what they communicate and to speak with sincerity, commitment and purpose.
Reflecting on the making of the Indian Constitution, Kenye praised the contributions of Dr BR Ambedkar and the members of the Constituent Assembly in establishing a constitutional
framework that has sustained the country's democratic system through changing times.
He noted that India's diversity, encompassing different cultures, traditions, languages and social realities, makes the functioning of democracy both challenging and significant.
Highlighting Nagaland's unique constitutional position, Kenye dwelt on the circumstances surrounding the state's formation and the importance of Article 371A in safeguarding Naga religious and social practices, customary laws and procedures and the ownership and transfer of land and its resources.
He added that the provision was described as an important constitutional safeguard reflecting the understanding and foresight of the state's leaders in protecting the identity and interests of the Naga people.
The event promoted parliamentary democracy, constitutional values and democratic participation among students.
