Bengal govt moves against 252 unauthorised madrasas; nearly 100 served show-cause notices

Kolkata, Sep 13 (UNI) The West Bengal government has initiated a major crackdown on unauthorised and infrastructure-deficient madrasas across the state, with 252 institutions served notices for closure and nearly 100 others show-caused for allegedly operating in violation of prescribed norms. Another dimension has been added to the issue with reports of alleged infiltration by extremist elements in some of these institutions.
The action follows a statewide inspection aimed at assessing the approval status, infrastructure and functioning of madrasa institutions. The drive was initiated following a direction from Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to ascertain through a survey how many madrasas in each district were authorised and how many were functioning without approval.
The Minority Affairs and Madrasa Education Department surveyed the state to examine the records and functioning of madrasas. Officials collected documents from madrasas located in all 23 districts, including Kolkata, and physically verified their status. The exercise found several institutions functioning without the necessary government approval or adequate infrastructure.
