Odisha: Gandhi Jayanti march highlights Daya river pollution

Bhubaneswar, Oct 2 (UNI) Concerned over the growing pollution of the Daya river, a group of environmental activists, social workers and citizens took out a foot march on Gandhi Jayanti day today, calling for urgent steps to protect the river from pollution and depletion.
The Daya River Padayatra began at Lingaripur Square and proceeded towards Bankual, near the confluence of the Daya and Bhargavi rivers, in afternoon.
The march was jointly organised by the Mahanadi Bachao Andolan, Daya Suraksha Abhiyan, Kalinga Culture and Heritage Protection Association and the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI).
Organisers said the Daya faces severe water depletion during summer and has become increasingly polluted by sewage and solid waste carried through the Gangua channel from Bhubaneswar. Indiscriminate dumping of garbage into the river has further compounded the problem, they said.
“Rivers are the lifelines of society and the natural world, and their protection is essential for the survival of all living beings,” the organisers said, urging greater public participation in river conservation.
The march was led by Mahanadi Bachao Andolan convenor Sudarshan Das. Social worker and KOPOK president Sangram Paikaray, Daya Suraksha Abhiyan convenor Sachhikanth Pradhan, senior journalist and Mahanadi Bachao Andolan spokesperson Girija Shankar Dash and several TAAI members participated.
Members of the Lingaripur Youth Group also supported the programme. UNI MK SS
