Duttapukur explosives haul: Showroom owner remanded in police custody for three days

Barasat, Oct 22 (UNI) A Barasat court on Thursday remanded Sheikh Rakibul Islam, a motorcycle showroom owner arrested in connection with the recovery of explosives and suspected prohibited chemicals from a vehicle at Duttapukur in West Bengal's North 24-Parganas district, to three days of police custody.
The arrest followed a joint operation involving the state police's Special Task Force (STF), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the National Security Guard (NSG) and forensic personnel at Tentultala on Jessore Road on Wednesday night. Intercepting a vehicle on suspicion, the teams reportedly recovered around 3 kg of suspected explosive material, approximately 10 kg of splinter material and other suspicious substances.
The investigating agencies are examining the nature of the recovered materials, their intended destination and whether there was any plan to use them for a subversive activity. Probe is on to establish their source, identify those who may have been involved in transporting them and determine whether the case has any wider or international links.
According to police sources, the STF had prior information about suspicious items being carried in a vehicle in the Tentultala area. Acting on the tip-off, the agencies kept the vehicle under surveillance before intercepting it on Wednesday night and questioning its owner, Rakibul Islam. Investigators suspect that the consignment might have been intended for Kolkata.
The recovered articles reportedly included explosive material and metal mesh or rods. Their exact composition and explosive capability will be established through forensic examination.
Following Islam's arrest, investigators searched his residence at Bamungachhi and his motorcycle showrooms.
Islam reportedly gave up vehicle repair work around a decade ago to set up a motorcycle showroom business. He currently operates four showrooms in areas including Tentultala and Bira in Duttapukur, and Berachampa in Deganga.
Investigators are also expected to examine whether there is any connection between the present recovery and an explosion reported several years ago at a motorcycle showroom in Amdanga, whose owner was reportedly Islam. No link between the two incidents has been established so far.
Barasat police superintendent M. Marcy said the investigation was under way and that the recovered consignment was being examined.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh said that no one indulging in subversive activity would be allowed to spread a terrorist network as they use to spread during the Trinamool Congress tenure.
