Gandhian thought influencing global peace movements: Rajagopal

Bhagalpur, Oct 1 (UNI) Noted Gandhian thinker Rajagopal on Thursday said Gandhi's ideas of non-violence, peace, self-reliance and dialogue remained relevant to addressing global challenges marked by war, violence and destruction.
Addressing a press conference organised by Disha Gramin Vikas Manch here on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, Rajagopal said Gandhian thought continued to influence movements for peace and against nuclear weapons in different parts of the world.
Referring to a campaign against nuclear weapons in Canada, he said Gandhi's ideas had an important place in such initiatives.
He also referred to a peace conference held in Africa in August and said efforts were underway to train social workers in Gandhian thought and self-reliance for work in different African countries. He said social organisations in Africa had expressed interest in support from organisations associated with Gandhian thought in India.
Rajagopal also referred to what he described as the proposed "P-7" alongside the G-7, saying the initiative would place peace at the centre of its engagement. Social organisations from Japan, India, South Africa, Switzerland, Canada and Armenia were participating in the process, he said.
He said people trained through such initiatives were already working in Palestine, Senegal and several other countries.
Rajagopal is scheduled to attend Gandhi Utsav programmes in Bhagalpur and Banka marking the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi's visit to Bhagalpur.
During the celebrations, he will release an Angika translation of Gandhi's autobiography and confer the Gandhi Samman on senior advocate and child rights activist Hariom Jindal of Ludhiana.
