Fire breaks out on 27th floor of Kolkata's South City tower; residents evacuated

Kolkata, Oct 30 (UNI) A fire broke out on the 27th floor of Tower 3 at the South City residential complex in south Kolkata on Friday morning, triggering panic among residents and prompting an emergency evacuation.
Seven fire engines were pressed into service to bring the blaze under control.
The fire was initially spotted near the servants' quarters on the 27th floor of the 30-storey tower.
The police and fire department were immediately alerted.
As a precautionary measure, the power supply to the building was disconnected, rendering the lifts inoperative and forcing residents, including children and elderly people, to get out of the building through the staircases.
The evacuation proved challenging as residents from the upper floors rushed downstairs amid confusion and panic.
Firefighters also faced difficulties in reaching the 27th floor to put out the blaze.
Although the fire is contained, firefighting operations are continuing to ensure it is completely extinguished.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, though a short circuit is suspected. The extent of the damage is also not known immediately.
"The fire broke out in Tower 3. Residents have been evacuated. Police from the Jadavpur police station and the fire department are on-site," general secretary of the South City Residents' Association, Debashis Basu, said. The South City comprises four residential towers.
The incident caused considerable alarm across the complex as emergency personnel worked to evacuate residents and bring the situation under control.
