Calcutta HC rejects protection for Milan Pradhan; asks Congress candidate to seek bail

Kolkata, Sep 25 (UNI) The Calcutta High Court on Friday set aside the protection granted by a single bench to Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in a fresh case, directing him to pursue the normal legal remedy of seeking bail.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ravindra B Ghuge and Justice Om Narayan Rai was hearing the West Bengal government’s challenge to the order of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, which had restrained the police from treating Pradhan as arrested in another case and from taking coercive action against him. The Chief Justice questioned the basis of the single-bench order, observing, “How can a single bench pass such an order? I am surprised to see this order.”
The division bench also questioned why Pradhan had not sought anticipatory bail or, after arrest, regular bail. The Chief Justice said that, as a student of law, he would strictly follow the legal procedure. He pointed out that courts could hear urgent matters even during holidays and that the legal process did not stop on Saturdays or Sundays.
