Calcutta High Court extends protection to Mahua Moitra till January 2027

Kolkata, Oct 1 (UNI) The Calcutta High Court has extended interim protection to Krishnanagar Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, directing that no coercive action be taken against her till January 29, 2027, in connection with a case pending before the court.
Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, while hearing the matter, continued Moitra’s interim protection and fixed January 13 as the next date of hearing.
The court also extended police security for the MP while she travels to her Lok Sabha constituency till November 30, taking into consideration concerns over her safety.
The issue of alleged police inaction over incidents involving Moitra in Krishnanagar, where eggs were reportedly thrown at her and black flags were shown during her visit to the constituency, was also taken up.
Justice Bhattacharyya transferred the matter to a division bench headed by the Chief Justice.
The court directed that until the petition concerning the alleged police inaction is heard and disposed of by the Chief Justice-led division bench, Moitra will continue to be accompanied by police security whenever she visits or travels within her Lok Sabha constituency.
The directions provide the Krishnanagar MP with interim legal and security protection while she undertakes political activities and travels within her constituency.
However, Moitra continues to face a separate legal proceeding over alleged provocative remarks on social media.
The Diamond Harbour Cyber Police have issued her another notice directing her to appear before the police station on October 3.
The case relates to a social media post made by Moitra on September 1 concerning police officers.
In the post, she alleged that IPS and IAS officers belonging to a particular community had been kept away from an event of union Home Minister Amit Shah in North Bengal.
A resident of Diamond Harbour subsequently lodged a complaint objecting to the post and alleged that it amounted to communal provocation.
Based on the complaint, a case was registered against Moitra at the Diamond Harbour Cyber Crime Police Station.
Moitra had earlier been summoned by the police in connection with the case but did not appear. The latest notice has now directed her to appear on October 3.
