Five sentenced to three years in jail in Odisha mule bank account fraud case

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19 (UNI) The JMFC court at Khallikote in Odisha’s Ganjam district has convicted five persons in a case involving the misuse of bank accounts as mule accounts for financial transactions and fraud and sentenced them to three years’ imprisonment.
The convicts have been identified as Sushant Sahu, Sudam Patra, Pabitra Sahu, Bimal Kumar Sahu and Pradeep Das. The court convicted them under Sections 318(2)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and awarded three years’ imprisonment to each of them.
According to the case details, a case was registered at Beguniapada police station in connection with fraud committed through mule bank accounts. The accused allegedly lured young people with offers of free travel and financial benefits and induced them to open bank accounts.
They subsequently collected ATM cards, passbooks and other personal documents from the account holders and used the accounts as mule accounts for carrying out financial transactions, police said.
The case was investigated by Beguniapada police under the supervision of Purushottampur SDPO S.K. Nayak. During the investigation, police collected details of bank accounts and financial transactions from various banks.
Mobile phones, laptops, ATM cards, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, cheque books and hotel bills were also seized during the investigation, police said.
The court convicted the five accused under Sections 318(2)/3(5) of the BNS, 2023, based on the statements of nine witnesses produced during the trial.
Odisha Police has continued legal action against the misuse of bank accounts, financial transactions through mule accounts and related financial fraud.
Strict legal action would continue against persons involved in such offences and networks operating mule bank accounts, police said.
