Police arrest three suspects for raping a law student

Kolkata, June 27 (UNI) Three suspects — a former student and two regular students of South Calcutta Law College, a state-run institution — have been arrested by Kolkata Police in connection with an alleged gang rape reported to have occurred on the college campus in Kasba. The incident allegedly took place on June 25, between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm.

The accused were presented before the Alipore court on Thursday, where the police sought 14-day custody. The court, however, remanded them in police custody until the following Tuesday.

The police have not disclosed the names or identities of the accused. According to their statement, an FIR based on the young woman's complaint has been filed against three individuals identified as ‘J’, ‘M’, and ‘P’ – all of whom are associated with the law college.

Following the complaint, the survivor underwent a medical examination. The police also recorded witness statements and inspected the scene of the alleged crime. The location has been cordoned off, and adequate security measures have been implemented. Forensic samples are set to be collected from the site.

Police stated that two of the accused named in the FIR were apprehended on Wednesday evening.

Acting on information from their interrogation, officers arrested the third accused from his residence around 12:30 am. All three of their mobile phones have been seized. The police plan to produce them in court on Friday and will request custody for further questioning.

Reacting to the incident, leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, launched a scathing attack on the government, saying, “The police is entirely responsible for this! The entire Kolkata Police has been taken to Digha (at Rath Yatra). What is Kolkata Police doing there? The Chief Minister has no right to be in her chair. We shall take this up.”

BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya, in a post on X, called the incident “horrific,” stating that the crime was committed by a former student and two college staff members, and alleged that a TMC member was also involved.
Referring to the recent RG Kar hospital incident, Malviya said crimes against women continue unabated in West Bengal and accused the Mamata Banerjee-led government of turning the state into a "nightmare for women."

Member of National Commission for Women, Archana Majumdar wrote on her X handle, “After the R.G. Kar incident, yet again a girl student gang raped inside a college campus — in the heart of the city. If women are not safe in educational institutions or workplaces, it reflects a complete breakdown of law and order in the state. No mercy for rapists — strictest punishment must follow.”
