Bihar Govt must expedite relief, rescue work for flood victims: CPI(ML)

Patna, Sep 16 (UNI) CPI(ML) MP from Ara Sudama Prasad Wednesday urged the Bihar government to expedite relief and rescue operations for people affected by floods and provide compensation for the losses suffered.
Addressing a press conference here, Prasad said nearly 50 lakh people in 15 districts of Bihar had been affected by the floods. He demanded that district- and block-wise official figures of flood-related deaths be made public.
According to the party, it has collected information on flood-related deaths in Bhojpur, Bhagalpur, and rural Patna. The party claimed that 24 people had died in Bhojpur, 10 in Bhagalpur and 10 in Punpun block so far.
Prasad said that, according to figures released by the Bhagalpur district administration on September 12, 114 panchayats and 456 villages in the district had been affected, with around 9.15 lakh people impacted by the floods. He said floodwaters had entered a large number of houses and crops had also been damaged.
The CPI(ML) leader called for food, drinking water, medicines, fodder for livestock, boats and safe shelter to be provided to affected families. He also demanded verification of flood-related deaths and publication of official figures, along with appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased.
He further sought surveys of damaged crops and flood-affected houses so that assistance could be provided to farmers and families.
Former CPI(ML) MLA Gopal Ravidas said relief materials should be distributed according to the needs of affected areas. He demanded an inquiry into complaints of irregularities in relief distribution and a transparent system at the panchayat level.
Party Bhagalpur zone in-charge Mukesh Mukt said health camps, medicines, and safe drinking water should be arranged in affected areas in view of the risk of water-borne diseases after the floodwaters recede. He stressed the need for timely government assistance to affected farmers and families.
CPI(ML) leaders said protests would be held in various districts of the state on September 18 and 19, demanding relief for flood victims, faster relief and rescue operations, publication of official figures of flood-related deaths, compensation for the families of the deceased, and assistance for crop and house damage.
