Ganesh idol immersion turns fatal, 11 drown in Odisha

Bhubaneswar, Sep 16 (UNI) Ganesh festivities turned tragic in Odisha on Wednesday as at least 11 people, including six children, drowned in separate incidents during Ganesh idol immersion, police said on Wednesday.
The deaths were reported from Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Ganjam and Bhadrak districts. In Jagatsinghpur, four youths drowned in the Brudhha River near Gopalpur bridge under Erasama police limits while carrying a Ganesh idol into the river. Fire Service personnel and an ODRAF team recovered the bodies and took them to Erasama Community Health Centre, where doctors declared them dead.
In Sundargarh, three minor girls drowned in the Sankh River under Raiboga police limits while collecting sand and water for a puja ritual, while three girls were rescued by the villagers. Ganjam reported three deaths. Two teenagers drowned in the Ghodahad River at Hinjilicut, while a Class VIII student drowned in a village pond at Siddhikhandi during Ganesh festivities. In Bhadrak, a Class IX hostel student drowned in a pond near Dighia market while participating in Ganesh festivities with fellow students.
Odisha Fire and Emergency Services Director General Sudhanshu Sarangi urged people to avoid deep or unfamiliar waters and exercise caution around rivers and ponds during festive activities. The State has recorded around 9,000 drowning deaths over the past five years. The Government is preparing a comprehensive action plan focusing on improved safety measures, trained lifeguards, and public awareness to curb such fatalities.
