Prashant Kishor questions functioning, credibility of Election Commission

Darbhanga, Oct 8 (UNI) Jan Suraaj convenor Prashant Kishor, MLA, Thursday questioned the functioning and credibility of the Election Commission, saying concerns over the poll panel were not limited to incumbent Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar but had been raised over its functioning for several years.
Talking to reporters in Darbhanga, Kishor referred to former Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar being appointed as part-time chairman of HDFC Bank after his retirement and questioned why a retired election official was subsequently given such a senior position amid allegations and concerns over the conduct of elections. “Should this be considered a reward for alleged irregularities in voting?” Kishor asked.
He said Kumar retired as Chief Election Commissioner in February 2025 and was appointed part-time chairman of HDFC Bank in July 2026 following approval from the Reserve Bank of India.
Kishor said institutional reforms were necessary to restore public confidence in the Election Commission. These, he said, should cover the appointment of election commissioners, voter lists, scheduling of elections, implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, and the vote-counting process.
He stressed that public trust in the electoral process must be strengthened and said the impartiality and credibility of the Election Commission were paramount in a democratic system.
“Any doubt over the integrity of the electoral process is not in the interest of democracy,” he said.
