Tejaswi demands immediate relief, compensation for flood and drought affected people

Patna, Sep 20 (UNI) Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) National Working President and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Prasad Yadav on Sunday described the flood and drought situation in Bihar as serious and urged the Centre and the state government to provide immediate relief to affected people and compensate farmers after assessing crop losses.
Speaking to media persons, Yadav said Bihar had been facing flood conditions for the past 28 days, while several parts of the state were also experiencing drought-like conditions due to inadequate rainfall. He said rainfall in the state had been significantly below normal, affecting standing crops across lakhs of hectares. The government, he added, should promptly assess losses caused by the drought and provide relief to farmers.
The Leader of Opposition said around 50 lakh people had been affected by the floods. Several houses had been damaged and household belongings washed away. He claimed that relief camps and community kitchens in some areas had not operated for a sufficient period. He urged the government to ensure adequate relief materials, food and essential assistance for flood-affected people.
Yadav said unnecessary documentation should be avoided while providing relief and assistance should reach those in need without delay. In a disaster situation, he said, state resources should primarily be used to assist affected people.
He also referred to provisions made during the previous Mahagathbandhan government for the use of the contingency fund during disasters. He demanded that the government make public details of the current status of the contingency fund and the amount available for flood relief.
Yadav said reports indicated that paddy, maize, vegetable and banana crops across around 1.5 lakh hectares had been affected by the floods. He demanded an early survey of damaged crops and appropriate compensation for farmers.
He said union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had visited Bihar following the issues raised in his letter and repeatedly highlighted by him. Mr Yadav demanded that the Centre make public the assessment carried out during Chouhan's visit, as well as reports related to relief, rehabilitation and flood damage.
The RJD leader said a large number of people had been affected by the floods and the Centre should provide additional assistance to Bihar. He also sought details of assistance provided to the state from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund and other central resources.
Yadav said the government should clarify its priorities regarding expenditure on various events and flood-relief operations amid the prevailing situation. He said resources needed to be mobilised on a large scale to provide relief to affected people.
He said Bihar had the BJP's national president, the Chief Minister, union ministers and a large number of MPs and MLAs, and urged them to take up the issue with the Centre and ensure necessary assistance for the flood-affected areas of the state.
The Leader of Opposition demanded immediate assistance of Rs 15,000 for each flood-affected family and an early survey of farmers affected by both floods and drought, followed by compensation.
