Bihar SIR row intensifies as Tejashwi targets CEC, announces state-wide protests

Patna, Oct 5 (UNI) The political battle over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar intensified on Monday, with Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav launching a sharp attack on the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, accusing the poll panel of working in favour of the BJP.
The attack came after a meeting of parties belonging to the INDIA alliance in Patna. Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Tejashwi Yadav alleged that the Election Commission was now working for the BJP.
“Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Gupta has become a puppet of the BJP. Through the SIR process, even the names of living people were included in the list of deceased persons, and irregularities were committed in the deletion of voters’ names. In violation of the election code of conduct, Rs 10,000 each was deposited into women’s bank accounts until the day of polling in order to benefit the NDA in the Bihar elections, and votes were purchased. Everything that we had been saying earlier has now come to light,” he said.
The RJD leader further alleged that the period for retaining voting records had been reduced from one year to 45 days.
“Earlier, voting records were kept for one year, but Gyanesh Kumar Gupta changed the law and reduced this period to 45 days. This itself makes their intentions clear,” he said.
Yadav further said Bihar is the birthplace of democracy, but alleged that it was in Bihar that “Modi ji experimented with killing democracy.”
“At the behest of the BJP and Modi-Amit Shah, the SIR process was initiated from Bihar by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar Gupta,” he said.
Yadav said the fight to “save democracy” would be fought in Bihar and that the alleged dishonesty of the Election Commission would be exposed.
As part of the campaign against what he described as a nexus between Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and the Election Commission in Bihar, an Aakrosh March (protest march) will be held at the block level across the state on October 7. On October 8, protests will be held at all district headquarters in Bihar.
On the same day in Patna, all MLAs, members of the Legislative Council and party leaders will undertake a Save Democracy March from Shaheed Smarak near the Patna Secretariat to Raj Bhavan.
Yadav said that on Tuesday, Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs would hold a Save Democracy March in front of the Election Commission in New Delhi. After October 15, once an appointment is scheduled with the President, leaders of the Mahagathbandhan will meet the President and submit a memorandum.
