Jharkhand: Marandi seeks early appointment of Chief Information Commissioner

Ranchi, Sep 18 (UNI) Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi on Friday urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren to expedite the appointment of the Chief Information Commissioner and make the Jharkhand State Information Commission fully functional.
In a letter to Soren, Marandi sought an immediate meeting of the selection committee, completion of the appointment process and resumption of regular hearings on appeals and complaints before the State Information Commission.
Marandi said Information Commissioners had been appointed but the Chief Information Commissioner was yet to be appointed, preventing the commission from starting hearings on pending appeals and complaints.
He said he had agreed to and signed the recommendation for the appointment of Information Commissioners on the assurance that the Chief Information Commissioner would be appointed soon.
Marandi also referred to proceedings before the Jharkhand High Court, saying the government had assured the court that the appointment process would be completed. The High Court has previously recorded that Information Commissioners were appointed in June but the Chief Information Commissioner had not been appointed.
He said the delay was affecting citizens seeking information under the Right to Information Act and urged the Chief Minister to provide a clear timeline for completing the appointment and starting regular hearings.
The Supreme Court has also been monitoring the appointment of Information Commissioners in states, while the Jharkhand High Court had earlier noted delays in making the State Information Commission functional.
