Meghalaya Cong burns Gyanesh Kumar effigy, demands his removal and arrest

Shillong, Sep 25 (UNI) Congress workers in Meghalaya burnt an effigy of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar here on Friday, demanding his immediate arrest and removal amid an ongoing row over the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Kumar’s effigy was burnt at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat, following a protest march from Congress Bhavan led by State Congress president and former union Minister, Vincent H Pala.
Levelling serious allegations against the Chief Election Commissioner, Pala claimed that the integrity of the institution had been compromised.
“The CEC has manipulated the system within the Election Commission. Over the past 10 months, the two other election commissioners raised 14 formal objections, but he bulldozed right through them with the backing of the BJP,” Pala alleged.
The Congress president further claimed that the prevailing election laws had been systematically amended to facilitate the manipulation of the public mandate.
“In Haryana and Maharashtra, the Congress was projected to win, yet the outcomes were altered. In West Bengal, there has been massive manipulation through the extensive deletion of legitimate voters from the electoral rolls. All the lists and data have been manipulated in Delhi by a single man—the CEC and his office,” Pala alleged.
Pressing for Kumar's resignation and an official inquiry, the Congress leader insisted that the CEC step down immediately, while accusing the BJP of manipulating the Election Commission of India.
“The system has collapsed due to BJP’s manipulation. He should be arrested, and the BJP should take full responsibility for compromising the integrity of the Election Commission,” Pala said.
The Congress leader insisted that an arrest and an official probe were essential to revive public "trust and faith in the Constitution and in the system... the Election Commission has been running for so long”. UNI RRK SAS
