BJP holds Save Democracy rally in Aizawl

Aizawl, Nov 4 (UNI) The BJP has begun sharpening its political pitch in Mizoram ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections, with its state unit organising a rally in Aizawl on Wednesday to highlight its commitment to democracy and seek public support for the party.

Held under the slogan 'Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy', where BJP leaders defended the Centre's policies towards the Northeast and promised to address some of Mizoram's economic and employment-related concerns.

BJP's Mizoram in-charge Bhagwat Karad, addressing the gathering, said the northeastern states had received greater attention under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Referring to his own visits to the region during his tenure as a union minister, he said the Centre was concerned about the development and security of Mizoram, particularly given its small population and sensitive international borders.

Karad also promised to take up issues affecting farmers, particularly ginger cultivators who face difficulties in accessing wider markets. He said he would make efforts to address their problems and take up youth unemployment with the Centre to explore opportunities for more jobs.

Appealing to voters to support the BJP in the 2028 Assembly elections, he said the party wanted to bring development to Mizoram and resolve issues that successive governments had failed to address.

BJP state president and MLA K. Beichhua, meanwhile, defended the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, claiming that the exercise had been carried out smoothly in Mizoram.

He said more than 3 lakh names, accounting for around 3.89 per cent of the state's electorate, had been deleted during the revision. The deletions included voters who had shifted residence, deceased persons and those registered in more than one place, he said.

Rejecting allegations that the revision was politically motivated, Beichhua argued that the exercise had not targeted any particular party and that BJP supporters were also among those whose names had been removed. He maintained that the SIR was based on electoral provisions enacted during the Congress government's tenure and was intended to ensure that only eligible citizens remained on the voters' list.

Accusing the Congress and its allies of trying to discredit the exercise, he said the BJP stood for a lawful electoral process and the protection of democratic institutions. He also called for respect for the people's mandate and opposed attempts to change governments through force.

The rally comes as the BJP seeks to expand its political presence in Mizoram, where the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) currently governs the state.
