BJD accuses BJP of using violence, coercion to influence Odisha college polls

Bhubaneswar, Oct 10 (UNI) The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Saturday accused the ruling BJP of using violence, abduction and political pressure to influence the upcoming students’ union elections in Odisha, alleging that ministers and MLAs were forcing candidates of its student wing to withdraw their nominations.
Addressing a press conference at the BJD headquarters here, party MLA Ganeshwar Behera alleged that the BJP was attempting to win the students’ union elections through undemocratic means and accused the police administration of remaining a silent spectator despite being aware of the incidents.
He also alleged that the ruling party was openly violating the Lyngdoh Commission guidelines governing student elections.
Citing an alleged incident at UK Mahabir College in the Pattamundai area of Kendrapada district, Behera claimed that a candidate of the Biju Chhatra Janata Dal (BCJD), the student wing of the BJD, was abducted by a BJP MLA aspirant from Rajnagar and his supporters and forced to withdraw his nomination.
The BJD leader strongly condemned what he described as attempts by the ruling party to secure electoral victories through coercion and intimidation.
BCJD president Ipsita Sahu claimed that the BJD enjoyed overwhelming support among Generation Z and said candidates of the party’s student wing had been elected unopposed in more than 100 colleges across Odisha.
She alleged that the BJP government was finding it difficult to accept the growing support for the BJD among students.
Sahu further alleged that elections in several colleges were being cancelled without valid reasons, raising concerns over the conduct of the students’ union polls in the state.
