Students should focus on understanding rather than rote learning : Joshi

Patna, Oct 10 (UNI) union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi has urged students to move beyond rote learning and focus on understanding concepts, developing creative thinking, and embracing new ideas.
He said that knowledge, creativity, and innovation would enable students to build a better future for themselves while making meaningful contributions to the development of the country.
Addressing a function at Bapu Auditorium here on Saturday, the union Minister highlighted the importance of the National Education Policy (NEP), which places special emphasis on innovation and education in regional languages.
He said that learning in students’ mother tongues and local languages could provide them with better opportunities to understand subjects and strengthen their educational foundations.
Joshi stated that the Central Government had made a provision of Rs 1 lakh crore in the budget to promote innovation. Citing the example of a startup company, he explained how knowledge, innovative thinking, and new ideas could help individuals achieve success. He encouraged students to develop their creative abilities alongside their academic studies and to explore new approaches through experimentation.
The union Minister also appreciated the Painting and Speech Competition organised in Bihar under the ‘Seva Hi Sankalp’ campaign. He described the initiative as one of the best programmes of its kind organised across the country. According to him, such competitions provide students with a platform to showcase their talents, express their ideas, and develop confidence and communication skills.
Addressing the students, Joshi emphasised their role in shaping India''s future by 2047, when the country will mark 100 years of independence. He said that today’s students would be young adults and future leaders at that time, carrying significant responsibilities for the nation’s progress.
He further noted that India’s economy was among the fastest-growing major economies in the world. In this context, he called upon students to equip themselves with knowledge, practical skills, and innovative capabilities so that they could contribute effectively to the country’s economic and social development.
The Minister’s message underscored the importance of shifting from memorisation-based learning towards conceptual understanding, creativity, and practical application. He encouraged students to become independent thinkers and innovators who could respond to future challenges and play an active role in building a developed India by 2047.
