Democracy weakened since BJP came to power in Tripura: Congress

Agartala, Oct 2 (UNI) Tripura Pradesh Congress president Ashish Kumar Saha alleged that democracy in the state has weakened since the BJP-led government came to power in 2018.
He said voters have faced threats and obstacles during all subsequent elections under BJP’s rule.
Saha spoke at a Congress Seva Dal sit-in outside Pradesh Congress Bhawan in Agartala, where party members demanded the arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Saha claimed voters had been stopped from reaching polling stations and that some who tried to vote faced pressure and harassment. He accused the ruling party of using alleged election violations and intimidation to sway results.
Addressing Gyanesh Kumar, Saha said those who had allegedly weakened the electoral process would be held to account. "Be prepared. The day the situation changes in this country and state, that is the day you will have to go to jail," he said.
Saha also criticised the BJP-led union government, alleging that Parliament had passed a law to shield the Chief Election Commissioner from arrest.
He challenged the state government's claims that elections were free and fair and referred to recent comments by the Chief Minister about the Election Commission.
Saha also accused the state government of failing on law and order, jobs and public administration. He said people's rights were being limited in government offices and alleged that the security administration was being used for political ends.
He questioned the government's claim of a "zero-tolerance" policy, saying organised theft and other alleged irregularities had worsened conditions in the state.
