NDA alliance jeopardized in Tripura after TIPRA Motha attacking BJP supporters

Agartala, Oct 8 (UNI) The alliance forged at the highest level between BJP and the tribal-focused TIPRA Motha party has led to significant backlash and unrest at the grassroots level following the announcement of the results for the Village Committee election of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (ADC) three days ago.
According to the report, numerous incidents of violence and vandalism have been perpetrated on BJP workers, with several assaults being carried out against them and party offices repeatedly damaged by cadres affiliated with TIPRA Motha.
The situation escalated further as prominent leaders of TIPRA Motha, including an MLA and an elected member of ADC, openly criticised the Central and State governments. Allegedly cadres from TIPRA Motha violently attacked the Gomati District Superintendent of Police (SP) along with several policemen during the election.
Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma was seen physically confronting an Additional SP and a female Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), sparking widespread condemnation. While BJP labelled their performance in the Village Council elections as a testament to the success of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), TIPRA Motha actively dismissed this narrative.
Leaders of Motha allegedly claimed that BJP, despite securing 16 per cent of the seats, sought to amplify its achievement, a claim that further exacerbated ground-level tensions. As a result, BJP workers increasingly became targets of intimidation and physical aggression from TIPRA Motha loyalists.
Reacting to these post-election hostilities, BJP workers and supporters staged a large-scale protest in Santirbazar in South Tripura district. Gathering at Bir Chandra Manu’s Manpathar for what marked a third consecutive day of agitation, demonstrators blocked roads and demanded immediate action against those responsible for violence linked to the elections.
They accused police and administrative authorities of negligence for failing to address their grievances and arrest the alleged perpetrators. The scope of the protests soon widened beyond demands for immediate arrests, with demonstrators expressing broader discontent over the political partnership between BJP and TIPRA Motha.
Calls were made for the removal of two TIPRA Motha ministers currently serving in the Tripura state Cabinet. Protesters went as far as urging BJP's central leadership to reconsider the alliance entirely, arguing that it had sown division within the party’s grassroots workforce.
According to demonstrators, veteran BJP workers in tribal regions were being sidelined and subjected to humiliation, eroding years of dedication and loyalty toward the party. Further charging the deteriorating political landscape, protesters voiced concerns regarding the governance of ADC, asserting that swift interventions were necessary to restore functional order and minimise communal friction.
Many party supporters also lamented the emerging divisions between tribal and non-tribal communities in light of recent political developments. In some quarters, disenchantment led BJP workers—who had been longstanding allies of the party—to announce their intent to disengage from its future activities due to perceived neglect and betrayal.
The repercussions of these festering tensions have not been limited to protests alone. In North Ekchhari Village under the Amarpur Assembly constituency, a Shakti Kendra office affiliated with BJP was deliberately vandalised and set ablaze shortly after election results surfaced.
Of the nine local seats contested in this area, TIPRA Motha clinched victory in seven, leaving BJP-backed candidates with only two. This particular incident exemplified the growing animosity that continues to polarise political factions at the community level.
Another political episode unfolded involving MLA Nandita Reang from TIPRA Motha. During her visit to connect with constituents and witness an independent candidate’s joining ceremony with her party, she faced resistance from locals who staged protests and shouted “Go Back” slogans. The situation forced her to take refuge inside a nearby house until tensions subsided.
Speculation has also heightened around TIPRA Motha’s trajectory amid its founder, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman, stepping away from active politics following recent announcements. His departure has fuelled questions about the party’s direction moving forward and its existing alliance with BJP at the leadership level.
Although the BJP-TIPRA Motha collaboration remains steadfast at its upper echelons, these developments highlight brewing dissatisfaction among lower-level personnel, which might jeopardise the alliance’s effectiveness in tribal regions, said a senior BJP leader of the state.
