BJP to launch campaign in West Bengal against Opposition, focus on civic polls

Kolkata, Oct 29 (UNI) The BJP will launch a statewide campaign against what it describes as “misinformation” by the Opposition and attacks on constitutional institutions, even as it prepares for the forthcoming municipal elections in Kolkata and Howrah.
The campaign, titled ‘Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy’, will begin on November 2, with the party planning rallies and marches across five organisational zones in West Bengal.
BJP national president Nitin Nabin is scheduled to visit Kolkata on November 2 to lead a mega rally from College Street to Dharmatala, alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, state BJP president Samik Bhattacharya and other senior party leaders and ministers. Nabin is also expected to hold an organisational meeting to review preparations for the civic polls and discuss the party’s electoral strategy.
The visit assumes significance as the BJP prepares to establish its political position ahead of the Kolkata and Howrah municipal elections. There has been considerable discussion within the party over candidate selection, particularly whether former Trinamul Congress councillors who may wish to join the BJP should be accommodated in its candidate list.
Nabin is expected to discuss the issue with state leaders, given the differing opinions within the party over inducting former TMC representatives. The meeting is also likely to focus on strengthening the organisation at the local level and determining the campaign strategy for the two civic bodies.
The 2nd November rally will mark the beginning of the BJP’s major counter-mobilisation against the agitation launched by the Opposition, including the Congress and other INDIA bloc constituents, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The BJP alleges that the Opposition is attempting to undermine constitutional institutions and create an atmosphere of political instability. The party believes that such protests could continue until the next Lok Sabha elections and has decided to counter them through a nationwide mobilisation campaign.
Nabin’s visit will be followed by that of union Home Minister Amit Shah after Kali Puja, adding to the significance of the BJP’s organisational preparations in the state. Shah’s proposed visit is also being closely watched amid discussions over the party’s strategy for the upcoming civic elections.
A senior state BJP party executive member said the campaign would be held across five zones, with rallies planned in several key locations.
“On November 3, the programme will be held in Howrah and Siliguri, followed by Krishnanagar on November 4 and Durgapur on November 5, ” the member said.
In Siliguri, the North Bengal programme is scheduled to begin at Baghajatin Park and proceed towards Airview More. Adhikari is expected to lead the mobilisation, with party leaders and workers from nine organisational districts of North Bengal participating.
The campaign will subsequently enter its second phase from November 11, after Kali Puja. The BJP plans to organise marches at 800 locations across the state, with a minimum participation target of 10,000 people.
The party has projected the campaign as an effort to unite nationalist forces in support of democracy and constitutional institutions. The programme also marks the first major statewide political mobilisation planned by the BJP following Nabin’s appointment as its national president.
Nabin had visited West Bengal in late September for a two-day tour during which he held several meetings with state leaders. His latest visit, coming amid preparations for the civic polls and intensifying political exchanges with the Opposition, is expected to provide direction to the party’s campaign in the state.
