Bengal: Relief reaches Bhutni, but flood victims scramble for supplies

Malda, Sep 17 (UNI) The grim reality of the flood in Bhutni came into sharp focus on Thursday when flood victims in North Chandipur scrambled onto a relief boat and took away packets of food and other essential materials as soon as the boat reached the Moharil More area.
The incident occurred even as the district administration maintained that relief distribution in Bhutni this year has been much higher than in previous years.
Two boats carrying relief materials were sent by the Malda district administration to flood-affected people in Sahebramtola and Moharil More in North Chandipur. District officials and Manikchak MLA Gour Chandra Mondal accompanied the relief consignment. Materials were first distributed at Sahebramtola without any major problem.
However, when the boats reached Moharil More, residents rushed towards them and took away relief packets and other materials.
The incident came against the backdrop of continuing difficulties faced by thousands of people in flood-hit Bhutni. Earlier, around 2.5 lakh people were reported marooned in Bhutni after a major breach in the ring embankment.
District Magistrate Rajanvir Singh Kapur, who inspected the flood situation in Bhutni on Thursday, said the administration had distributed several times more relief materials this year compared with the previous two years. He said complaints and requirements coming from different flood-affected areas were being recorded and necessary action was being taken promptly.
The Ganga at present is flowing above the extreme danger level, though the trend is receding, according to the information provided by the administration. However, increased discharge from the Kosi and Gandak barrages following heavy rain in their catchment areas remains a concern.
Mondal said he was monitoring relief distribution personally in coordination with the administration to ensure that essential supplies reached affected families. He appealed to people to cooperate and ensure that drinking water and relief materials were not wasted or misused.
The administration is maintaining close watch over the situation as the overall flood condition in Malda shows signs of improvement. Relief and essential supplies are continuing to reach the worst-affected areas, particularly Manikchak and Ratua.
