Subsidised urea meant for Indian farmers intercepted on way to Myanmar

Aizawl, Oct 30 (UNI) A truck carrying 550 bags of urea fertiliser without the mandatory government authorisation was intercepted in Mizoram's Khawzawl district on Friday, exposing
a suspected attempt to divert subsidised agricultural supplies to the Myanmar market.

The consignment, valued at Rs 7.15 lakh, was seized during a routine vehicle inspection at Tuisenphai Police Check Gate at around 7.30 am. The truck was travelling from Vairengte,
near the Assam border, towards Champhai, which shares an international boundary with
Myanmar.

Police arrested the truck's owner and driver, identified as Lalremruata, 46, of Tuikual South
in Aizawl. The vehicle bore an Aizawl district registration number.

According to police, the 550 bags of urea, valued at Rs 1,300 each, were being transported without
a valid allotment order or acknowledgement from the competent authority. During questioning, Lalremruata reportedly disclosed that he intended to sell the fertiliser in Myanmar at a higher price.

The seized consignment and truck were being handed over to the District Agriculture Officer, Khawzawl, for further legal action.

The seizure has drawn attention to the alleged diversion of heavily subsidised fertilisers supplied
by the Central Government for Indian farmers.
An official of the Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Department said the cross-border movement of such supplies had become a concern, particularly because fertiliser prices in Myanmar could offer traders an opportunity to make substantial profits.

The official pointed out that farmers in Mizoram generally use relatively small quantities of chemical fertilisers and depend largely on organic manure. The comparatively low local consumption, coupled with the price difference across the international border, was believed
to make subsidised fertiliser vulnerable to smuggling.

The department's concern centres on the possibility that agricultural inputs intended to support Indian farmers are being diverted into commercial channels across the Myanmar border, defeating the purpose of the government's subsidy programme.
