WB CM asks tourism, forest ministers to jointly drive Alipurduar development

Siliguri, Oct 2 (UNI) Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday asked Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh and Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon to work together for the overall development of Alipurduar and the Dooars, with tourism, forests and wildlife conservation forming the focus of the development process.
Concluding his speech at a programme in Alipurduar, the Chief Minister specifically addressed the two ministers and said they should “work hand in hand” and bring about the overall development of the region by giving importance to its forests, wildlife and tourism potential.
The Chief Minister was in Alipurduar after the release of a tiger in the Buxa Tiger Reserve. He later attended a large programme organised in Alipurduar, which also included observance of Gandhi Jayanti and activities under the Swachh Bharat initiative. Ghosh arrived at the programme somewhat later.
When Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reached Raja Bhatkhawa, several residents of the Buxa Hills met him and demanded that the road for vehicle movement be required. They also raised concerns about possible tiger attacks after dark following the release of a tiger in the area.
The Chief Minister assured them that Minister of State for Home and Hill Affairs Bishal Lama would look into the issues and take steps to resolve their problems.
The programme in Alipurduar Parade Ground also featured an exhibition organised by the district administration and the Forest Department, comprising 12 stalls showcasing the region’s rich flora and fauna as well as the cultural heritage and activities of its various ethnic communities.
The Dooars, often described as a “mini India” because of its diverse ethnic composition, is home to communities including the Garo, Rava, Limbu, Mech, Toto, Santhal and Oraon communities. The stalls provided a representation of their traditional activities, culture and way of life.
The Chief Minister visited the exhibition and interacted with members of different tribal communities.
He enquired whether they were receiving the benefits of various government schemes and facilities.
He also interacted with forest personnel and met five fishermen who had rescued an elephant calf that was swept away by the Teesta River near Gajoldoba. The interaction highlighted the role of local people and frontline forest personnel in wildlife rescue and conservation.
The Chief Minister also interacted with students and enquired about the prayers being conducted in their schools and colleges.
He expressed happiness after learning that students were singing the full-length version of “Vande Mataram” in educational institutions.
As part of efforts to promote wildlife conservation and create greater public involvement in the protection of wild animals, a Tiger Cup Club was also formed in Alipurduar following the reintroduction of the tiger in Buxa. The Chief Minister interacted with members of the club during the programme.
The programme thus brought together the themes of wildlife conservation, forest protection, tourism, tribal heritage and community participation, with the Chief Minister calling for coordinated efforts by the Tourism and Forest departments for the region’s development.
