Mizoram eyes ropeway network to beat city congestion

Aizawl, June 17 (UNI) In a bid to decongest its fast-growing capital, Mizoram is exploring the possibility of introducing a ropeway system under the Centre’s Parvatmala Pariyojana – a national ropeway development initiative aimed at improving mobility in hilly terrains, a top functionary said today.
Governor General (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd) during the day held a consultative meeting with officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), and the state’s Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department at Raj Bhavan to discuss the project’s feasibility in Mizoram.
“Urban congestion in Aizawl cannot be tackled by looking inward anymore. We must start planning beyond the city’s core to implement such crucial infrastructure,” the Governor said, stressing that projects like Parvatmala could offer smart, scalable solutions for the state’s topographical constraints. He underlined the urgency of interdepartmental coordination to chart a workable blueprint for ropeway connectivity.
MoRTH Additional Secretary Vinay Kumar assured that the ministry is ready to extend full support to push forward ropeway development in Mizoram. He noted that projects under Parvatmala have shown strong potential in improving last-mile connectivity and generating local revenue, with 90% of earnings from ropeways being retained for regional development.
UD&PA Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau presented a detailed roadmap for implementing ropeways under the proposed Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP). He said a Comprehensive Mobility Plan had already been formulated covering the 280 sq km urban agglomeration of Aizawl and its surrounding areas. The vision includes ropeways, pedestrian zones, truck and bus terminals, and improved bus services.
The meeting was also attended by Ajit Roy, Secretary to the Governor, Jacob Lalawmpuia, Director of UD&PA, and Prashant Jain, Vice President of NHLML, along with other key officials.
The Parvatmala initiative, launched by the central government, aims to harness ropeway transport as a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and time-saving mobility option, especially suited for hilly and difficult terrains like Mizoram. UNI ZS SSP
