Guwahati, June 15 (UNI) Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday warned of cloudy weather for Guwahati and adjoining areas in next two to three days with heavy to very heavy rainfall.
The weather pattern suggests that thundershower with 75 percent predictability with heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely at the isolated places of the city today to coming 2-3 days which may aggravate water logging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable pockets," a statement issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority said on Sunday.
The city authorities are closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems are being kept on alert, the statement said.
In view of the recent incidents of landslides and water blockage due to very heavy rainfall occured in the city few days back, Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) requests people of Guwahati to take all necessary precautions and remain vigilant. "Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides," it said
The advisory also asked the residents in vulnerable to keep adequate stock of essential items such as medicines, candles etc. They are advised to reach out ASDMA on 0361-1070, 0361-1079 and DDMA on 0361-1077.
"The people living in the identified landslide prone vulnerable areas of the city are advised to shift themselves to the safe shelters (relief camps) or other safer places of their choice for next 3 days," the ASDMA said.
The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain.
It may be mentioned here that while different parts of Assam have been reeling under soaring temperature to the tune of 40 degree celsius, incessant rainfall for several days towards the end of May this year have triggered flash floods and landslides in different parts of Guwahati leading to death of five persons in Guwahati.
