Brewing Bay of Bengal cyclone may bring rain to Kolkata, heavy showers in coastal districts

Kolkata, Oct 23 (UNI) A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring moderate rainfall to Kolkata and heavy showers to parts of south Bengal on October 28 and 29, with coastal districts expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
Weather scientists said a low-pressure area lay over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of the south-east Bay on Friday. The system is expected to intensify into a depression over the same region on October 24 before moving west-north-westwards and strengthening into a deep depression on October 25.
The system is likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26 and remain over the sea on October 26 and 27, gradually moving towards land, a weather scientist at the RMC said.
“If the system follows the predicted route, it could make landfall along the coastal belt between north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha on October 28. Although West Bengal is unlikely to be directly affected by the landfall, parts of south Bengal, particularly the coastal districts, could experience increased rainfall and squally winds from October 27,” the official said.
Under the system's influence, Kolkata is likely to receive moderate rainfall accompanied by winds of 30–40 kmph on October 28 and 29. South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram could receive heavy rainfall of up to 110 mm over the two days, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph.
“If the cyclone remains over land for a prolonged period, the impact of persistent rainfall could be greater. In that case, even moderate rainfall could have a considerable impact,” the official said, adding that the system's actual track and likely effects would become clearer after it intensifies into a depression.
The approaching system has reportedly been named Arnab by Bangladesh. UNI NN NST CDS
