Well-marked low-pressure area likely to bring rain, thunderstorms to Bengal from Sept 22

Kolkata, Sep 21 (UNI) A well-marked low-pressure area brewing over the east-central and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal is tipped to bring thunderstorms, lightning, high winds and a good amount of rainfall to Kolkata, and heavy downpour in three coastal districts, including South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore and West Midnapore, between September 22 and 25.
The weather office has issued an orange warning for the coastal districts and a yellow warning for the remaining districts of South Bengal for the four days when the brewing system is likely to have an impact on West Bengal.
According to weather scientists at the Regional Meteorological Centre, the system, which was in the form of a low-pressure area till yesterday, intensified into a well-marked low-pressure area during the early morning hours on Monday. Moving at a speed higher than its predecessors this rainy season, the system is anticipated to gain momentum and turn into a depression by the next morning.
Although weather scientists are mostly expecting relief from a cyclone or the downpour and high winds brought by such systems for Kolkata, the possibility of a cyclone is not being ruled out.
“From the observations made till today, the system is likely to intensify maximum as a deep depression that causes winds of speed 61 kmph. Beyond that, it is considered a cyclone. The brewing well-marked low-pressure area is most likely to remain as a deep depression but on the borderline with a cyclone,” an official said.
“As the well-marked low-pressure area is spread over a large area today, its track would be confirmed after it intensifies into a depression by the night or in the next morning,” he pointed out.
Even as weather experts are expecting the system to remain as a deep depression and the distance of the system from the place of landfall is anticipated to be far off, it is likely to bring a good amount of rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and even high winds over the next four days.
As the system is far away in the Bay of Bengal today, when the city experienced a bright sunny day, the sky is anticipated to go cloudy from tomorrow and the region is tipped to get good rainfall for the next four days, with heavier showers on September 24.
While the rainfall is expected to be up to 70 mm for Kolkata during the period, the wind speed, as per today’s observations, is anticipated to reach around 40 kmph in most of the districts of the South Bengal region.
The districts of East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram have been issued a warning of very heavy rainfall of up to 200 mm on September 24, while heavy rainfall of up to 110 mm is tipped for South 24 Parganas, Bankura, Purulia, West Burdwan, Birbhum and Howrah on that day. UNI NN NST
