72,000 NCC cadets deployed for Civil Defence duties during Op Sindoor

New Delhi, Sep 17 (UNI) More than 72,000 NCC cadets volunteered for a range of duties during Operation Sindoor, supporting Civil Defence and helping maintain essential services, while the National Cadet Corps simultaneously stepped-up training in emerging technologies such as drones and cyber security, according to the Ministry of Defence’s Annual Report 2025-26.
The NCC cadets were deployed for sentry and guard duties, passive air defence, casualty evacuation, shifting civilians to safe places, crowd and traffic management, first-aid camps, mock and siren drills and preparation of field defences, besides assisting civil authorities and coordinating with state machinery and local military establishments.
The large-scale participation during Operation Sindoor marked a significant role for the youth organisation in supporting civilian authorities during a period of heightened security preparedness. Cadets also participated in blood donation camps and traffic control duties, as part of the broader civil defence effort.
Alongside this operational exposure, the NCC has expanded its training framework to prepare cadets for technology-driven security and civilian sectors, with drone technology and cyber training emerging as key areas of focus.
The NCC has institutionalised drone training as a core component of its training framework. Structured modules covering basic drone operations, DGCA-aligned Remote Pilot Certificate training and advanced flying skills have been introduced across multiple NCC Directorates.
The training combines classroom instruction with practical exposure, allowing cadets to undertake drone assembly, calibration, simulation and live flying, with safety procedures forming an integral part of the programme.
According to the report, more than 2,400 cadets and 200 instructors have so far been trained in drone technology. The NCC is also introducing drone competitions and developing Remote Pilot Training Organisation facilities to expand its institutional capacity.
The initiative is intended to equip cadets with skills applicable to both defence and the growing civilian drone sector.
The NCC has also begun strengthening its cyber training programme in collaboration with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Ministry of Home Affairs. Cadets have participated as cyber volunteers in awareness programmes and workshops conducted through Annual Training Camps and Combined Annual Training Camps.
The organisation is also working on a long-term plan to transform the NCC into a National Cyber Cadet Corps, with enhanced cyber-response capabilities aimed at contributing to the country's cyber security ecosystem.
Beyond defence-oriented skills, the NCC has expanded its focus on entrepreneurship and innovation. In 2025, all NCC Directorates conducted at least one start-up awareness programme during training camps, with support from EXPA.
An Idea and Innovation Competition and Start-up presentation held at Vijayawada involved 340 cadets, with the participating Directorates showcasing 85 innovations. The projects were evaluated by experts from industry, defence design organisations and entrepreneurship sectors.UNI PWS AAB
