CM Gupta launches heritage clubs in 75 Delhi govt schools

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) The Delhi government on Friday launched Heritage Clubs in 75 CM Shri Government Schools to give students hands-on exposure to the capital’s history, culture and heritage beyond classroom lessons.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who launched the initiative, said students needed to understand their roots and experience the city’s heritage first-hand rather than merely study history in textbooks. The clubs will involve students in heritage walks, museum and archive visits, documentation of local history and other activities aimed at developing an interest in heritage conservation.
“Merely studying history is not enough; it is important to connect children with their roots,” Gupta said.
The Department of Art, Culture and Language and Delhi Archives will conduct year-round activities under the programme. These will include guided visits to historical sites, museums, archives and libraries, heritage quizzes, poster and painting competitions, exhibitions and projects on local history.
Students will also be encouraged to produce short documentaries and digital stories on Delhi’s cultural heritage, document oral histories and local traditions through interactions with older members of their communities, and learn about traditional arts and crafts. Heritage Days and festivals will also be organised as part of the programme.
Education Minister Ashish Sood said the programme was aimed at familiarising the younger generation with Delhi’s history, including its freedom struggle, prominent personalities, art, culture and local traditions. He said making Delhi the country’s cultural and startup capital was a key priority of the government.
Art, Culture and Language Minister Kapil Mishra said Delhi’s history extended beyond well-known landmarks such as Mehrauli and the Red Fort. The clubs, he said, would introduce students to the city’s wider historical and cultural legacy.
The government said the programme would also seek to encourage students to take an active role in understanding and preserving local heritage.
