DRDO to lead semiconductor, next-gen chips session at ESTIC-2026

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) will lead a thematic session on semiconductors and next-generation chips at the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC-2026), scheduled to be held at Bharat Mandapam here from October 27 to 29.
The session will bring together industry leaders, researchers, academics and representatives of India's indigenous semiconductor and defence electronics sectors to deliberate on chip design, semiconductor fabrication, artificial intelligence (AI) computing and strategic applications of microelectronics.
The conclave is being jointly organised by 12 ministries and departments under the guidance of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. It aims to advance the vision of Viksit Bharat @ 2047 and strengthen self-reliance through science, technology and innovation.
The DRDO-led session will feature a keynote address by the Vice-President and Managing Director of Micron India, followed by presentations by the chief executives of Bharat Semi and Netrasemi and the Director of IIT Madras. The discussions will cover purpose-built AI system-on-chips, intelligence at the silicon edge and developments in microprocessor technologies.
Presiding over a curtain-raiser event organised by DRDO in Bengaluru today, Distinguished Scientist and Director General (Electronics and Communication Systems) Dr BK Das emphasised the importance of semiconductors and next-generation chips for economic competitiveness, digital sovereignty and national security.
He said a resilient, end-to-end microelectronics ecosystem was essential to support telecommunications, automotive systems, industrial automation, AI hardware and strategic defence platforms as India moves towards the goal of Viksit Bharat.
Dr Das also stressed the need to strengthen domestic capabilities to safeguard the economy against global supply-chain disruptions, geopolitical uncertainties and international technology export controls. He underlined India's ambition to become a global semiconductor powerhouse, enhancing strategic autonomy and high-value exports across the microelectronics value chain.
Distinguished Scientist and Director General (Technology Management) Dr Anupam Sharma highlighted the growing significance of semiconductors in modern warfare, noting that these technologies were integral to virtually every aspect of military operations. He also said business in the semiconductor-related segment was expected to reach USD $200 billion by 2035.
Alongside the thematic session, DRDO will showcase indigenous technologies at its outreach stall at ESTIC-2026. The exhibits will include advanced communication systems, quantum technology prototypes, extreme-cold-weather clothing, the PRABALA female full-body protector, passive and powered exoskeletons, portable hybrid energy management systems, high-power pulse laser diodes and scramjet engine technology.
The display will highlight DRDO's research and development initiatives and efforts to develop indigenous technologies for defence and other strategic sectors. It is also expected to encourage collaboration among industry, academia, start-ups and research institutions.
Senior DRDO officials, including the directors of the Solid State Physics Laboratory and Electronics and Radar Development Establishment, along with representatives of the Directorate of Extramural Research and Intellectual Property Rights and the Combat Aircraft Systems Development and Integration Centre, attended the curtain-raiser event.
