Delhi CM attends Haritalika Teej celebrations with Nepali, Gorkhali community

New Delhi, Sep 20 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday participated in the Haritalika Teej Mahotsav 2026 organised for the Nepali and Gorkhali community at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, highlighting the festival's cultural significance and the community's contribution to the country.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta described Haritalika Teej as more than a traditional fast, calling it a celebration of women's resolve, faith and strength. She said the festival, associated with the penance and determination of Goddess Parvati, continues to reflect the dedication and resilience of women.
“Haritalika Teej is not merely a fast, but a saga of women’s resolve and power,” Gupta said. She said Teej songs, rituals and traditions help preserve women's cultural expression and pass it from one generation to another. A society that keeps alive festivals centred on its women also preserves its cultural heritage, she added.
Referring to the Nepali and Gorkhali community in Delhi, the Chief Minister said its contribution to the country extends across several fields, including national security, education, medicine, literature, music, sports and business.
“The identity of the Nepali and Gorkhali society is defined by their courage, discipline, honesty, and loyalty,” she said.
Gupta also praised Yoga Guru Swami Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna for their contribution to promoting yoga and Ayurveda. She said Ramdev had helped take yoga beyond ashrams to the wider public, while Balkrishna had contributed to strengthening the scientific dimensions of yoga and Ayurveda.
The event, organised by Hamro Swabhiman Trust, was attended by Delhi Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, Swami Ramdev, Acharya Balkrishna and prominent members of the Nepali and Gorkhali community.
Ten personalities were felicitated with the ‘Hamro Gaurav Samman’ for their contributions to society and the nation. Gupta said recognising people whose work may not have received adequate public attention was an important part of celebrating a community's achievements. She said honouring soldiers, teachers, farmers, artists and public officials was not merely a ceremonial exercise but a way of documenting their contribution to society.
Mishra, who holds the Art, Culture and Language and Tourism portfolios, said such cultural gatherings helped preserve traditions while strengthening social unity and cooperation. “Through such events, we are also strengthening our rich traditions, unity, and spirit of cooperation in society,” he said.
Mishra also appreciated the people of Delhi for their sensitivity and support towards those affected by the recent natural disaster in Nepal. He said yoga, Ayurveda and India's cultural traditions had a wider relevance beyond the country and could contribute to knowledge and healthy living globally.
