Murugan joins Swachhata Hi Seva activities at IIMC, urges collective responsibility for cleanliness

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) union Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr L. Murugan on Thursday participated in a series of activities under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ campaign at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) here, calling upon students, officials and citizens to contribute to cleanliness initiatives in institutions and public spaces.
The programme began with the administration of the Swachhata pledge, in which faculty members, officers, staff, students and Indian Information Service trainees participated.
Addressing the gathering, Murugan recalled the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 and said the cleanliness campaign had evolved into a people’s movement with participation across the country.
“After Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the cleanliness campaign in 2014, people across the country became part of this movement. Cleanliness drives were also undertaken in offices and institutions,” he said.
The minister urged people to contribute to cleanliness efforts wherever possible, including at Anganwadi centres, temples, educational institutions and other public places.
“Today, along with students and officials at IIMC, we have taken the pledge for cleanliness. We should contribute through Swachhata Seva wherever possible... It is our collective responsibility to keep our country, institutions and offices clean,” he said.
Murugan also participated in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ plantation initiative by planting a sapling on the IIMC campus. He stressed that the responsibility does not end with planting trees and that their continued care and maintenance was equally important.
He subsequently joined students, faculty members, officers and staff in a one-hour Shramdaan as part of the cleanliness drive. Participants cleared waste and construction material from designated areas on the campus.
During his visit, the minister also inspected the newly constructed classrooms and other academic and infrastructure facilities, including the teaching block, hostel under construction and renovated library. He interacted with students from different states and departments of the institute.
Murugan appreciated the initiatives undertaken by IIMC in promoting cleanliness, environmental awareness, campus development and student participation.
IIMC Vice-Chancellor Dr Pragya Paliwal Gaur, Registrar and DG Training L Madhu Nag and Senior Economic Advisor R.K. Jena were present during the programme, along with faculty members, officers, staff, students and officer trainees.
The activities formed part of IIMC’s observance of the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, which seeks to promote collective participation in cleanliness, environmental conservation and responsible citizenship.
