India accuses UN Human Rights Office of ‘extreme selectivity’ over Delhi protests

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) India on Sunday accused the United Nations Human Rights Office of “extreme selectivity” in its public positions and rejected its concerns over the detention of protesters in New Delhi as “unwarranted”, calling them an “unacceptable interference” in the country’s internal affairs.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India is the world's largest democracy, where the right to peaceful assembly is guaranteed by the Constitution and safeguarded by robust institutions, an independent judiciary and a free media.
“As in every democracy, Indian citizens exercise this right subject to the maintenance of public order and safety,” the ministry said, adding that law enforcement authorities acted strictly in accordance with the law and that courts remained available to address grievances.
