Supreme Court defers Delhi protest pleas to Oct 15

New Delhi, Oct 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday deferred to October 15 the hearing on pleas related to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The hearing was postponed after Justice V Mohana fell ill, with the parties agreeing to the adjournment. The matters were listed before a bench headed by CJI Surya Kant and comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana.
The Court also sought the presence of a senior Delhi Police officer to address allegations by women journalists of police assault while covering the protests.
The court issued notice on a fresh plea by the Association for Democratic Reforms challenging Section 16 of the Chief Election Commissioners and Other Election Commissioners Act, 2023, which grants immunity to election commissioners for official acts.
In its October 11 directions, the court ordered that peaceful, unarmed assemblies outside areas covered by prohibitory orders must not face unlawful detention. It also directed authorities to ensure normal public transport and internet services, free movement subject to traffic rules, access for lawyers and journalists, and a review of barricades.
