CPI(M) condemns ‘virtual curfew’ in Delhi, says crackdown won’t silence protesters against SIR

New Delhi, Oct 10 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist), on Saturday, accused the authorities of turning New Delhi into a “virtual curfew zone” to suppress peaceful demonstrations against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, condemning the alleged police crackdown and the arrest of several senior party leaders, including general secretary M A Baby and veteran leader Brinda Karat.
In a statement issued on October 10, the CPI(M) Polit Bureau alleged that the Delhi Police had resorted to widespread repression against protesters demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the withdrawal of the SIR exercise and comprehensive electoral reforms.
The party maintained that the demonstrations were directed against what it described as large-scale disenfranchisement arising from the revision of electoral rolls.
