Supreme Court's remarks expose failure of Delhi's pollution control measures, alleges Congress

New Delhi, Nov 6 (UNI) With Delhi's air quality deteriorating into the severe category and the Air Quality Index (AQI) crossing the 400-mark, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president Devender Yadav on Friday accused the Rekha Gupta government of failing to address the underlying causes of air pollution, alleging that its much-publicised Winter Action Plan had remained confined to paper.
Reacting to the Supreme Court's criticism of the authorities over their inability to tackle the worsening pollution crisis, Yadav said it was unfortunate that the apex court had to reprimand the Delhi government for its failure to take effective measures against pollution sources, particularly vehicular emissions and traffic congestion.
Addressing a meeting of the Indian National Trade union Congress (INTUC) at the DPCC headquarters, Rajiv Bhawan, Yadav said the observations made by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant had vindicated the Congress's stand that vehicular pollution and road dust were among the major contributors to Delhi's deteriorating air quality.
He said successive governments, including the previous Aam Aadmi Party dispensation and the present BJP government, had repeatedly highlighted stubble burning as a major reason for Delhi's pollution, while overlooking local pollution sources that required immediate intervention.
"Delhi Congress has consistently maintained over the past several years that vehicular emissions and dust pollution within the Capital are major contributors to the deteriorating air quality. The Supreme Court's observation that vehicular emissions from crawling traffic and heavy vehicles in Delhi-NCR are major pollution sources reinforces what we have been highlighting," he said.
Yadav alleged that despite repeated announcements and assurances, the Rekha Gupta government had failed to translate its pollution-control commitments into tangible action on the ground.
He expressed concern over the health implications of prolonged exposure to toxic air, particularly for children, senior citizens and people suffering from respiratory and other illnesses. Millions of residents, he said, were being forced to breathe polluted air as the city struggled with hazardous pollution levels and traffic congestion.
Demanding immediate intervention, the Congress leader urged the Delhi government to implement its Winter Action Plan in a time-bound manner and demonstrate concrete results rather than treating it as a publicity exercise.
