Five Left parties accuse Centre of stifling protest rights ahead of Oct 10 Delhi mobilisation

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) Five Left parties today accused the Narendra Modi government of undermining citizens’ constitutional and fundamental rights by imposing sweeping restrictions in the national capital ahead of the October 10 mobilisation against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Condemning the Delhi Police measures as an attempt to prevent people from participating in the proposed demonstration, the parties demanded that the authorities withdraw the curbs and allow protesters to reach Jantar Mantar peacefully.
In a joint statement, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist)-Liberation, Revolutionary Socialist Party and All India Forward Bloc alleged that the restrictions had been imposed to obstruct the planned mobilisation. “We strongly condemn the extraordinary restrictions imposed by the Delhi Police under the directions of the union Home Minister,” the parties said, describing the measures as “an attack on the Constitutional and fundamental rights of citizens to protest peacefully”.
