NSUI activist alleges custodial assault by Delhi Police; Rahul Gandhi warns of action

New Delhi, Oct 14 (UNI) An NSUI activist from Kerala has alleged that Delhi Police personnel assaulted him and other detainees, including four minors, following their detention during protests demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday warned that those responsible would face action.
Arjun, who has lived in Delhi for three years, made the allegations at a press conference addressed by Gandhi. He claimed that police personnel punched him in the face, kicked him in the chest, back and private parts, and strangled him inside a police vehicle.
He alleged that detainees were taken to a makeshift facility near the Life Insurance Corporation building close to Rajiv Chowk, where their mobile phones were seized and searched before they were allegedly assaulted.
“I entered the jail van, and I was punched in my face. And I'm on the floor. They kicked me on my chest, on my back, in my private parts. They strangled me,” Arjun said.
He further alleged that four boys aged 16 and 17, who were not participating in the protest, were beaten inside the vehicle. A detainee with a fractured hand was also allegedly assaulted.
According to Arjun, the detainees were later taken to a detention centre at Pandwala Khurd, around 35-40 km from central Delhi. He claimed the minors were released without their phones or money to travel home, while medical assistance to injured detainees was provided only after a senior officer arrived.
Gandhi urged students to preserve video evidence of alleged police excesses and share it with the Congress to pursue accountability. “To the police personnel, I have told all the students to keep a video record and send that evidence to us,” he said, adding that “everyone who needs to be punished” would face consequences, from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah to the personnel allegedly involved.
Gandhi described the protest as a collective voice cutting across religious, caste and gender lines, saying, “There is one voice, one protest. It is the voice of India.”
A woman protester also alleged that a female police constable grabbed her by the neck, scratched her face and slapped her during detention.
