CPI(M) takes Delhi protest curbs to SC, accuses Modi Govt of crushing dissent

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has moved the Supreme Court challenging restrictions imposed in the national capital ahead of the opposition's planned October 10 protests, alleging an attempt by the Narendra Modi government to suppress peaceful dissent and undermine democratic rights.
CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby has approached the apex court against measures that reportedly include the cancellation of train services to Delhi, the closure of metro stations and the suspension of internet services. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal is representing Baby in the matter.
Announcing the legal challenge in a statement posted on the social media platform X on Friday, the CPI(M) said Baby had sought judicial intervention against the restrictions, contending that they impeded the opposition's ability to organise demonstrations and exercise its democratic right to protest. The move escalates the confrontation between opposition parties and the Centre over the arrangements for the planned mobilisation in Delhi, which forms part of a broader campaign against the Election Commission of India.
